Vodafone Smart Tech App – eSIM User Flows

Global Flows

As a Product Design Lead at Vodafone I’ve worked on creating, developing, documenting and cataloguing the main Global Flows within the Vodafone Smart Tech app, which are those base flows present in all of the different areas of the app, regardless of which smart device the user has purchased. I’ve then created a library of flows in Figma, which can be easily and swiftly selected and applied on any given project, to facilitate and expedite designer’s as well as developer’s workloads, identifying and streamlining all of the possible paths and scenarios for complex journeys such as Payments, Invoices and Subscriptions and to keep UI / UX consistency across app’s areas and products.

The main problems identified

  • Unclear navigational paths in main areas of the app such as Payments, Invoices and Subscriptions
  • Inconsistent design patterns, lack of reusable components, layouts and defined interactions
  • Outdated IA leading to structural misalignment amongst design and engineering teams

The goal of the project

  • Definition of clear and consistent navigational path in all areas of the app
  • Creation of reusable navigational flow which take into account backend services and technologies
  • Implementation of design guidelines, principles and best practices to ensure alignment with brand standards

The approach

Working cross-collaborative in an agile environment alongside stakeholders, POs, back-end and front-end engineers as well as the broader product design team, I’ve carried out the following tasks:

  • Collaborated closely with back-end and front-end engineers to understand technical constraints and feasibility, ensuring seamless integration of complex navigational flows.
  • Employed user-centered design principles to conduct extensive user research and testing, refining and iterating on navigation solutions based on data-driven insights and feedback.
  • Leveraged Figma and other product design software to create interactive prototypes and wireframes, visually communicating design concepts and interactions to the development team for implementation.
  • Engaged in iterative design sprints and cross-functional workshops to align stakeholders on the navigation architecture, iteratively refining navigation elements based on usability testing results to achieve an intuitive and cohesive user experience.

Smart Tech App – eSIM Ecosystem – Flows

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a tiny chip installed in your device that connects to the mobile network, similar to a physical SIM.

    • It cannot be physically removed or replaced

    • During set up, an eSIM profile is loaded onto your device through an internet connection

    • The eSIM profile contains the same information previously stored on a physical SIM

As part of my work into developing the navigational flows, I was responsible for how the UX and UI of the eSIM service would be designed and seamlessly merged with the other areas and products within the app in the European market. I’ve created user-centred styles, components, and patterns by considering market analysis, customer feedback, site metrics, and usability findings, aligning team with the other teams and enhancing the CX of the overall Vodafone Smart Tech app.

The global IoT connectivity leader

Vodafone’s IoT service was established in 2008 and has grown to be the largest IoT connectivity provider globally, with 150 million devices connected. Vodafone IoT has been recognised as a leader in managed connectivity by Gartner every year since 2014. Vodafone IoT currently generates €0.9 billion annual revenue with double-digit revenue growth and a strong double-digit ROCE. The total addressable market is €10 billion and expected to grow 16% p.a., with further stimulus from the NextGenerationEU recovery plan funding, supporting Vodafone’s further expansion into end-to-end IoT services.
